This is the 1998 edition of WebNews the Newsletter of the extended Howard family featured in this web site. This is where news and family history developments during the year were posted so that interested members of this extended Howard family can keep up to date with new finds, leads, family history events, births, marriages and the like. Most recent events are posted first.

Event: Letter from Rose Bateman dated 4th December 1998

Content: Copy of birth certificates of James Alfred Howard and Laura Eliza Howard, twin boy and girl to James and Laura Howard (see 14 July 1998 entry) born on 7 Sep 1894 at 21 Narsill St., Battersea. A perfect early Christmas present!


31st August 1998

Event: Howard Family Get Together - Wandsworth

Description: Get together at Carole Nuttall's (nee Howard) house in Wandsworth between Rose Bateman's family and Frederick Howard's Family - Carole is Rose's daughter. After more than 150 years continued occupation in Wandsworth, the Howards were once again re-assembled to meet members of the two respective families brought together by this family history project. More than 30 people turned out to meet and greet new family members and make some new friends into the bargain.


14th July 1998

Event: Letter from Rose Bateman

Content: Copy of marriage certificate of James John Howard and Laura Gertrude Lewry m. 4 Dec 1892 at St. Saviour's Church in the Parish of Battersea. Also copies of family photos of Rose's Uncle, Philip Lewis Howard and her Aunt, Ivy (nee Creasy) together with a photo of Rose's Uncle James Albert ("Jack") Searle, Aunt Eliza Ellen Searle (nee Howard) and cousin James ("Jim") Searle.


10th June 1998

Event: 6 Certificates received from FRC

Results: A disappointing return, only 2 Certificates proved to be useful. Four were found to be incorrect.


5th June 1998

Event: Visit to Family Records Centre, London.

Purpose: To search for various birth, marriage and death events.

Results: 5 Certificates ordered, due 11th June 1998. Further search for the births of Daphne Howard and Eleanor May Howard proved fruitless but I did find her marriage to a Stanley Howard and the birth of their son Douglas and his marriage in 1964 to a Sandra Bishop. With these added clues I am hoping to find Eleanor on another visit. Watch this space.


4th June 1998

Event: 13 Certificates received from FRC

Results: 8 Certificates proved to be useful - 5 were found to be incorrect.


3rd June 1998

Event: Brief Visit to Family Records Centre, London.

Purpose: To search/order various birth, marriage and death events.

Results: 6 Certificates ordered (mostly long shots), due 9th June 1998.


28th May 1998

Event: Visit by Frederick George Howard.

Purpose: To meet up following initial contact by phone.

Results: Great to meet Fred - what a character! Fred's passion is bee keeping. Fred brought many old photos and original certificates of his family with him which he has kindly loaned for me to include details in the family history records. - thanks Fred!


28th May 1998

Event: Visit to Family Records Centre, London.

Purpose: To search for various birth, marriage and death events.

Results: 13 Certificates ordered, due 4th June 1998. Search for births of Daphne Howard and Eleanor May Howard and her marriage to a Stanley Howard (all as per conversation with Betty Taylor) proved fruitless.


27th May 1998

Event: Phone call from Rose BAteman

Purpose: To update information in Family History Book prior to planned reunion.

14th May 1998

Event: Letter from Rose Bateman

Content: Stanley Turner had written to Rose Bateman, after the death of Rose's great Aunt Nellie, with details of his family. As these are quite extensive, these will be included in the next update to the family history pages.


18th April 1998

Event: Telephone Call to Frederick George William Howard in Morden Surrey, located from UK-info Disk UK telephone numbers database (CD-ROM).

Purpose: To locate Frederick Howard, son of George Henry Howard - long lost first cousin of Rose Bateman.

Result: My long-shot CD-ROM search paid off! Two Frederick Howard's living in Surrey, the first one was the one I was looking for. We had a long conversation, he has five children who, in turn, have large families so another chapter in the Thames Ditton Howards is opening up! Called Rose Bateman and left a message for her to get in touch with Fred Howard.


12th April 1998

Event: Letter from Rose Bateman

Content: Rose's letter brought both sad and interesting news of family developments and copies of birth, marriage and death certificates for her immediate branch of her family.

Event: Visit to County Record Officer - Kingston-upon-Thames

Purpose: Review Electoral Rolls for Banstead searching for Alfred and son Kenneth Howard's Families

Result: The Electoral Roll Registers confirmed that Alfred and his son, Kenneth were indeed living in the Banstead area circa 1950's.

Event: Five certificates received from FRC

Result: one birth, one death and three marriage certificate received as follows:-


14th February 1998

Event: Visit to Betty and Derek Taylor at Peterborough

Visited Betty and Derek Taylor at Peterborough to meet them for the first time and had a wonderful day sharing details of the Howard family history. It was a pleasure for me to meet Betty and Derek at long last and they were able to provide valuable photos, copy certificates and information to enhance the family history record. See 1997 Events for details of how I found Betty and Derek Taylor.


12th February 1998

Event: Visit to Greater London Records Office and Family Records Centre, London

Purpose: To review baptism/marriage records at St. Anne's Parish Church, Wandsworth and to search for relevant birth, marriage and death entries following further telephone conversation with Betty Taylor (George & Matilda Howard's family).

GLRO Results: Searched St. Anne's Baptism and Marriage registers - following relevant entries noted.

FRC Results: Searched birth/marriage/death registers for various entries of interest.

Four certificates ordered, due 20th February 1997.


7th February 1998

Event: Visit to Surrey Local Studies Library - Guildford

Purpose: To locate Mary Ann Howard and Alice Harriet Howard on 1891 census at New Haw

Result: The following census entry was found:-

New Haw Lane, Chertsey

This entry is believed to refer to Elizabeth Howard (nee Stanbridge) and her two youngest children Thomas and Mary Ann with her daughter Alice Harriet. Further work required to understand this fully.


6th February 1998

Event: Review of my Transcript Records

Result: In reviewing transcripts of St. Mary's Byfleet I discovered the baptism of Alice Harriet Howard.

Event: Seven certificates from GRO received

Result: four birth, two death and two marriage certificate received as follows:-


2nd Februray 1998

Event: Telephone Call to Paul and Irene Miseroy, sourced from the BT Phone Disk (CD-ROM).

Result: Following the leads provided by Hilary and Norman Miseroy I was able to make telephone contact with both Irene Miseroy and her son Paul. Irene was able to confirm and add to the details known of her family and also suggested that her Uncle Tom Howard and lived in the Byfleet area. A further area of research to look into.


31st January 1998

Event: Telephone Call to Hilary Miseroy, Northampton, located from UK-info Disk UK telephone numbers database (CD-ROM).

Purpose: As Miseroy is an uncommon name, to find possible links with Ferris Miseroy family.

Result: Hilary Miseroy and his father Norman, were able to recall that Ferris Miseroy had a son Paul Miseroy. Ferris was the brother of Norman's father.


30th January 1998

Event: Visit to Family Records Centre, Myddleton Street, London

Purpose: To search for relevant birth, marriage and death entries following visit to Surrey Records Office (Vincent/Songhurst marriage) and telephone conversation with Betty Taylor (George & Matilda Howard's family).

Results: Searched birth/marriage/death registers for various entries of interest. Solved the Vincent/Songhurst problem by locating birth of Irene Priscilla Songhurst (2Q 1913 at Chertsey) which gave maiden name of mother as HOWARD not, as expected, Vincent! So, Alice Harriet Vincent is in fact Alice Harriet Howard!

Armed with this new information, located birth entry for Alice Harriet Howard born 2Q 1889 (2a 45 at Chertsey). Also, marriage to Stephen George Songhurst (2Q 1909 at Chertsey). Additionally, found marriage of Irene Priscilla Songhurst to a Ferris B. Miseroy, 3Q 1939 (2a 1855 at Surrey NW).

Nine certificates ordered, due 6th February 1997.


17th January 1998

Event: Visit to Surrey Record Office at Kingston-upon-Thames

Purpose:To search electoral roll registers for occupation dates at 37 Dawson Road, Byfleet for Alice and Stephen Songhurst.

Result: Searched electoral registers 1918-1970. Full names of Alice and Stephen Songhurst now confirmed as Alice Harriet Songhurst (nee Vincent) and Stephen George Songhurst.

The following occupation information for 37 Dawson Road, Byfleet found:-

Conclusions:-

Next step will be to locate these certificates at Family Research Centre.


3rd January 1998

Event: Received a Letter from Susette Bakker (Perth, Australia)/Contact with Eagle Family One Name Study organiser

Susette's letter contained some corrections to the Marlow family details previously sent to Susette, together with a fine picture of her parents wedding which will enhance the family history record - many thanks Susette.

Additionally, made telephone contact with Penelope Pattinson who is the contact for the Eagle family one-named study. Letter written with details of Howard/Eagle family in the hope of tracing other family from the Howard/Eagle marriage of 1860.
