This is where news and family history developments during the year were posted so that interested members of this extended Howard family can keep up to date with new finds, leads, family history events, births, marriages and the like. Event: Letter from Rose Bateman dated 4th December 1998

Content: Copy of birth certificates of James Alfred Howard and Laura Eliza Howard, twin boy and girl to James and Laura Howard (see 14 July 1998 entry) born on 7 Sep 1894 at 21 Narsill St., Battersea. A perfect early Christmas present!

Event: Howard Family Get Together - Wandsworth

Description: Get together at Carole Nuttall's (nee Howard) house in Wandsworth between Rose Bateman's family and Frederick Howard's Family - Carole is Rose's daughter. After more than 150 years continued occupation in Wandsworth, the Howards were once again re-assembled to meet members of the two respective families brought together by this family history project. More than 30 people turned out to meet and greet new family members and make some new friends into the bargain.

Event: Letter from Rose Bateman

Content: Copy of marriage certificate of James John Howard and Laura Gertrude Lewry m. 4 Dec 1892 at St. Saviour's Church in the Parish of Battersea. Also copies of family photos of Rose's Uncle, Philip Lewis Howard and her Aunt, Ivy (nee Creasy) together with a photo of Rose's Uncle James Albert ("Jack") Searle, Aunt Eliza Ellen Searle (nee Howard) and cousin James ("Jim") Searle.

Event: 6 Certificates received from FRC

Results: A disappointing return, only 2 Certificates proved to be useful. Four were found to be incorrect.

Marriage: Yvonne Jeanne Howard to Gordon Albert Collins 22 Mar 1952 at St. Peters Parish Church. Staines. Yvonne Jeanne Howard aged 20 and daughter of Samuel Frederick Howard - conclusion: unrelated!
Marriage: Nigel Martin Howard to a Vicki Maria Hamilton - Not our Nigel Malcolm Howard as hoped.
Marriage: Martin Keith Howard to a Vivian Robertson - Not our Martin Kenneth Howard as hoped.
Birth: Edward Alfred Snook b. 18 Mar 1879 at 1 Warnham Cottages, Barnes son of William Henry and Fanny Snook
Birth: Edward Ernest Snook b. 9 Apr 1905 at Woodham Lane, Addlestone, Chertsey - son of Edward Alfred Snook

5th June 1998

Event: Visit to Family Records Centre, London.

Purpose: To search for various birth, marriage and death events.

Results: 5 Certificates ordered, due 11th June 1998. Further search for the births of Daphne Howard and Eleanor May Howard proved fruitless but I did find her marriage to a Stanley Howard and the birth of their son Douglas and his marriage in 1964 to a Sandra Bishop. With these added clues I am hoping to find Eleanor on another visit. Watch this space.

Marriage: Stanley Herbert Marlow to Ellen Howard 4Q 1896 Staines - this may tell me whether Ellen's father, George Howard, was alive in 1896 - we lost him after the 1881 census!
Marriage: Eleanor May Howard to Stanley E. White 1Q 1943 Battersea - just as Betty had said it would be - must have missed it during my first search!
Birth: Douglas H. White 2Q 1944 St. Albans - must have been evacuated to St. Albans!

Results: 8 Certificates proved to be useful - 5 were found to be incorrect.

Birth: Matilda Errington 24 Apr 1863 at 6 Ship Street, Canning Town, West Ham - Matilda's parents were confirmed as William and Mary Errington (nee Hale)
Death: Matilda Mary Howard 29 Apr 1945 - widow of William Henry Howard (carpenter) - not our Matilda even though age agrees.
Birth: Winifred Louisa Howard 9 Apr 1902 - daughter of Frederick and Louisa Mary Howard - not our Winifred.
Death: Winifred Louisa Howard 13 Mar 1903 Thornton Heath - daughter of Frederick and Louisa Mary Howard - not our Winifred.
Birth: Grace Doris Jean Howard 12 Jan 1903 South Norwood, Croydon - daughter of Harry Herbert Howard and Gertrude Ursula Boxall - not our Grace.
Marriage: George Edward Howard aged 25, (should be 24 by one day) occupation Chauffeur, to Daisy Franklin on 26 Dec 1910 at Parish of Sandridge, Hertfordshire - Father's name given as George Howard, occupation Carpenter which does not fit as father was supposed to have died c. 1900. Not conclusive particularly since witness is one Albert Howard and no Albert Howard is known in this family - for the time being we must conclude this not our George Edward Howard.

Marriage: Yvonne J. Howard to Gordon A. Collins 1Q 1952 Middx. S. - a long shot in my search for the marriage of Yvonne Jean Brenda Howard!

Event: Visit by Frederick George Howard.

Purpose: To meet up following initial contact by phone.

Results: Great to meet Fred - what a character! Fred's passion is bee keeping. Fred brought many old photos and original certificates of his family with him which he has kindly loaned for me to include details in the family history records. - thanks Fred!

Purpose: To search for various birth, marriage and death events.

Results: 13 Certificates ordered, due 4th June 1998. Search for births of Daphne Howard and Eleanor May Howard and her marriage to a Stanley Howard (all as per conversation with Betty Taylor) proved fruitless.

Event: Phone call from Rose BAteman

Purpose: To update information in Family History Book prior to planned reunion.

Karen Howard and Simon have had a girl - Meryin on 3 Nov 1997
Angela Howard has had a second child - Blaisim MacInnes on 11 Feb 1998
Wendy and Peter HAtch have had a daughter - Iona Ruth Hatch born 27 May 1998
Ester Searle died on 23 May 1991
Phillis Searle died on 15 Feb 1997
Derek Searle married and had two sons. They live in the Croydon area.
James William Albert Searle was born 22 Jan 1928.

Event: Letter from Rose Bateman

Content: Stanley Turner had written to Rose Bateman, after the death of Rose's great Aunt Nellie, with details of his family. As these are quite extensive, these will be included in the next update to the family history pages.

18th April 1998

Event: Telephone Call to Frederick George William Howard in Morden Surrey, located from UK-info Disk UK telephone numbers database (CD-ROM).

Purpose: To locate Frederick Howard, son of George Henry Howard - long lost first cousin of Rose Bateman.

Result: My long-shot CD-ROM search paid off! Two Frederick Howard's living in Surrey, the first one was the one I was looking for. We had a long conversation, he has five children who, in turn, have large families so another chapter in the Thames Ditton Howards is opening up! Called Rose Bateman and left a message for her to get in touch with Fred Howard.

12th April 1998

Event: Letter from Rose Bateman

Content: Rose's letter brought both sad and interesting news of family developments and copies of birth, marriage and death certificates for her immediate branch of her family.

Death - Eliza Ellen ("Nellie") Searle (Nee Howard) on 3rd April 1998 of aged 92
Birth - daughter to Karen (nee Howard) and Simon in Nov 1997. Karen Howard is the daughter of David and Sylvia Howard from Plymouth (more details to follow)

The following copy birth, marriage and death Certificates were also received:-

Death - James John Howard on 22 Sep 1914 - torpedoed whilst on active service on board HMS Cressy.
Birth - George Henry Howard, son of William Howard and Emma Howard (nee Route) on 2 Dec 1910 at 37 Courtney Road, Woking, Surrey.
Marriage - George Henry Howard, son of William and Emma Howard to Winifred Hilda Orme daughter of Frederick Orme 26 Dec 1933 at The Parish Church, Raynes Park, Surrey.
Birth - Frederick George Howard, son of George Henry Howard and Winifred Howard (nee Orme) on 11 Aug 1934 at "Veronica" Hare Road, Blindley Heath Lingfield, Near Godstone, Surrey.
Death - George Henry Howard on 27 Sep 1935 at Purley Cottage Hospital - died from injuries caused by falling from a tree whilst he was cutting a branch.

8th April 1998

Event: Visit to County Record Officer - Kingston-upon-Thames

Purpose: Review Electoral Rolls for Banstead searching for Alfred and son Kenneth Howard's Families

Result: The Electoral Roll Registers confirmed that Alfred and his son, Kenneth were indeed living in the Banstead area circa 1950's.

at 1 Picquets Way, North Banstead - Alfred Howard and Lillian G. Howard. By 1952 a Joan E. Sparks and John R. Sparks were living at this address.

1952

at 41 Parsonsfield Road, Banstead - Kenneth A Howard and Doreen M. Howard.

1954

at 41 Parsonsfield Road, Banstead - Harry T. Cage and Hilda M. Cage - Mother and Father of Doreen M. Howard (nee Cage). By 1956 an Irene M. Watts and Geoffrey A. Watts living at this address.

20th Februray 1998

Event: Five certificates received from FRC

Result: one birth, one death and three marriage certificate received as follows:-

Birth - Kenneth Alfred Howard on 20th June 1923 at 190 Croydon Road, Croydon, Surrey. Kenneth Howard's father given as Alfred Howard, a bus driver. Conclusion - this is the birth record of Alfred's son, Kenneth A. Howard.
Death - George Edward Howard on 3rd January 1976 at Brentwood, Essex. George Edward Howard's birth date/place given as 26th December 1886, London, one day before the known birth date of George Edward Howard, born Wandsworth. The death is reported by Ethel Maud Theresa BOURNE. Previous occupation stated as a stoker (Hospital) retired and address given as 49 Alfred Road, Brentwood, Essex. Conclusion - whilst this death is of interest there is insufficient evidence to support the theory that this is our George Edward Howard. Further evidence required.
Marriage - George Howard to Ethel Rendell on 11th May 1907. Married at St. Luke's Church, Battersea. George's father was named as George Howard, a porter. Conclusion - not related.
Marriage - Alfred Howard to Lillian Gertrude Willis on 17th September 1907. Married at Holy Trinity Church, Penge, near Croydon, Surrey. Alfred's father named as George Edward Howard (deceased) George Edward Howard, a cartage contractor - Alfred aged 28 a french polisher. Conclusion - this is the marriage of George Howard's son, Alfred Howard.
Marriage - Kenneth Alfred Howard to Doreen May Cage on 10th August 1946. Married at St. Paul's Church, North Banstead, Surrey. Kenneth's father named as Alfred Howard, a builder and decorator - Kenneth aged 23 serving in the RAF. Conclusion - this is the marriage of Alfred's son Kenneth Howard.

14th February 1998

Event: Visit to Betty and Derek Taylor at Peterborough

Visited Betty and Derek Taylor at Peterborough to meet them for the first time and had a wonderful day sharing details of the Howard family history. It was a pleasure for me to meet Betty and Derek at long last and they were able to provide valuable photos, copy certificates and information to enhance the family history record. See 1997 Events for details of how I found Betty and Derek Taylor.

Event: Visit to Greater London Records Office and Family Records Centre, London

Purpose: To review baptism/marriage records at St. Anne's Parish Church, Wandsworth and to search for relevant birth, marriage and death entries following further telephone conversation with Betty Taylor (George & Matilda Howard's family).

GLRO Results: Searched St. Anne's Baptism and Marriage registers - following relevant entries noted.

7th February 1998

Event: Visit to Surrey Local Studies Library - Guildford

Purpose: To locate Mary Ann Howard and Alice Harriet Howard on 1891 census at New Haw

Result: The following census entry was found:-

Elizabeth Dennis - Wife (M) - age obscured
Mary A. Dennis - Dau. - 21 - Domestic Servant
Thomas Dennis - Son - 19 - Farm Labourer
Alice H. Howard - G. Child - 2
John Snowden - Nephew - 7
Ada Snowden - --"--(sic) - 1

This entry is believed to refer to Elizabeth Howard (nee Stanbridge) and her two youngest children Thomas and Mary Ann with her daughter Alice Harriet. Further work required to understand this fully.

6th February 1998

Event: Review of my Transcript Records

Result: In reviewing transcripts of St. Mary's Byfleet I discovered the baptism of Alice Harriet Howard.

Baptism - Alice Harriet Howard on 26th May 1889. Daughter of Harry Edwin (Shirt maker) and Mary Ann Howard living at Addlestone.

6th February 1998

Event: Seven certificates from GRO received

Result: four birth, two death and two marriage certificate received as follows:-

Marriage - Stephen George Songhurst to Alice Harriet Howard on 12th June 1909. Married at St. Mary's Parish Church, Byfleet, Surrey. Stephen's father was named as Stephen George Songhurst, a bookbinder (Deceased). Alice Harriet's father not stated.
Marriage - Ferries Blundle Miseroy to Irene Priscilla Songhurst on 22nd July 1939 at Woking Registry Office. Ferris's father was named as Henry Eugene Charles Miseroy, of an occupation(!). Irene Miseroy's father is confirmed as Stephen George Songhurst (Foreman Tinsmith).
Birth - Irene Priscilla Songhurst b. 7th March 1913 at Station Road, West Byfleet.
Birth - Alice Harriet Howard b. 13th March 1889 at New Haw, Chertsey.
Birth - Alfred Howard b. 1st June 1895 at 74 Bendon Valley, Wandsworth.
Birth - Yvonne Jean Brenda Howard b. 24th February 1895 at 26 Marcus Street, Wandsworth. Mothers maiden name confirmed as Lillian Gertrude Willis.
Death - Stephen George Songhurst d. 13th April 1964, at Milford Chest Hospital, Nr. Godalming, Surrey.
Death - George William Howard d. 14th March 1900 at 13 Quarry Road, a commercial clerk aged 34 years. Death reported by S.H. Howard widow of the deceased. Conclusion: Unrelated - this is not George Howard who married Matilda Howard.

2nd Februray 1998

Event: Telephone Call to Paul and Irene Miseroy, sourced from the BT Phone Disk (CD-ROM).

Result: Following the leads provided by Hilary and Norman Miseroy I was able to make telephone contact with both Irene Miseroy and her son Paul. Irene was able to confirm and add to the details known of her family and also suggested that her Uncle Tom Howard and lived in the Byfleet area. A further area of research to look into.

31st January 1998

Event: Telephone Call to Hilary Miseroy, Northampton, located from UK-info Disk UK telephone numbers database (CD-ROM).

Purpose: As Miseroy is an uncommon name, to find possible links with Ferris Miseroy family.

Result: Hilary Miseroy and his father Norman, were able to recall that Ferris Miseroy had a son Paul Miseroy. Ferris was the brother of Norman's father.

30th January 1998

Event: Visit to Family Records Centre, Myddleton Street, London

Purpose: To search for relevant birth, marriage and death entries following visit to Surrey Records Office (Vincent/Songhurst marriage) and telephone conversation with Betty Taylor (George & Matilda Howard's family).

Results: Searched birth/marriage/death registers for various entries of interest. Solved the Vincent/Songhurst problem by locating birth of Irene Priscilla Songhurst (2Q 1913 at Chertsey) which gave maiden name of mother as HOWARD not, as expected, Vincent! So, Alice Harriet Vincent is in fact Alice Harriet Howard!

Armed with this new information, located birth entry for Alice Harriet Howard born 2Q 1889 (2a 45 at Chertsey). Also, marriage to Stephen George Songhurst (2Q 1909 at Chertsey). Additionally, found marriage of Irene Priscilla Songhurst to a Ferris B. Miseroy, 3Q 1939 (2a 1855 at Surrey NW).

Nine certificates ordered, due 6th February 1997.

Marriage: Alice Harriet Howard to Stephen George Songhurst 2Q 1909 at Chertsey.
Marriage: Irene Priscilla Songhurst to Ferris B. Miseroy 2Q 1913 at Chertsey.
Death: Stephen Songhurst 2Q 1964 Surrey SW for possible address of Irene Miseroy as informant.
Death: George Howard 1Q 1900 Wandsworth - possible death entry for George Howard [P42].
Death: George Howard 1Q 1893 Wandsworth - possible death entry for George Howard [P136].
Birth: Alice Harriet Howard 2Q 1889 Chertsey - who was father?
Birth: Irene Priscilla Songhurst 2Q 1913 at Chertsey.
Birth: Alfred Howard youngest son of George and Matilda Howard (as recalled by Betty Taylor) 3Q 1895 at Wandsworth
Birth: Yvonne Jean Brenda Howard daughter of Alfred and Lillian(?) Howard (as recalled by Betty Taylor) 1Q 1931 at Wandsworth to confirm mothers maiden name before locating/ordering marriage certificate. Mothers maiden name stated as Willis.

17th January 1998

Event: Visit to Surrey Record Office at Kingston-upon-Thames

Purpose:To search electoral roll registers for occupation dates at 37 Dawson Road, Byfleet for Alice and Stephen Songhurst.

Result: Searched electoral registers 1918-1970. Full names of Alice and Stephen Songhurst now confirmed as Alice Harriet Songhurst (nee Vincent) and Stephen George Songhurst.

The following occupation information for 37 Dawson Road, Byfleet found:-

1918 No Songhurst's living at this address
1920 to 1930 Alice and Stephan Songhurst in residence
1933 to 1939 Alica and Stephan Songhurst in residence plus Irene Priscilla Songhurst, (Daughter?).
1945 - 1964 Alice and Stephan Songhurst in residence
1967 Alice Songhurst in residence on her own
1970 No Songhurst's living at this address

Conclusions:-

Irene Priscilla Songhurst born bef. 1912.
Marriage therefore before 1912
Alice died c. 1970
Stephen died c. 1965
None of the previous possible births for A.H. Vincent fit - maybe born much earlier, out of wedlock??

Next step will be to locate these certificates at Family Research Centre.

3rd January 1998

Event: Received a Letter from Susette Bakker (Perth, Australia)/Contact with Eagle Family One Name Study organiser

Susette's letter contained some corrections to the Marlow family details previously sent to Susette, together with a fine picture of her parents wedding which will enhance the family history record - many thanks Susette.

Additionally, made telephone contact with Penelope Pattinson who is the contact for the Eagle family one-named study. Letter written with details of Howard/Eagle family in the hope of tracing other family from the Howard/Eagle marriage of 1860.
